David Immanuel Hammergren was born on June 16, 1875, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the third of five children to parents John & Marie Hammergren. David's father was 31 years old when he was born and his mother was abt age 26. They were both born in Sweden. David has two older siblings: Karl (1870) and Frederick (1871); and two younger siblings Norman (1877), Esther (1879).

According to the 1880 Census, the Hammergren family was living at 33 Bruno Street in St. Paul, MN. John Hammergren's occupation was listed as a flour packer. David was four years old and the youngest sibling at this time was Esther at age one.

In 1884, Marie died when she was approximately 35 years old. David was abt. nine years old when his mother died. Less than a year after Marie died, John married Lena Caroline Froeberg on December 6, 1884. They had four children together: Albert (1885), Alexander (1886), Walter (1889) and George (1891). Thus, David had four half-brothers in addition to the other four siblings.

According to the 1895 Census, the Hammergren family was living at 1189 Burr in St. Paul, MN. John Hammergren's occupation was listed as a laborer and he had been working at his employer for 10 years. David was the oldest sibling living with the family at age 21. His occupation was listed as a printer and he had been working at his employer for six years - this means David started in the printing business at age 15. The youngest sibling was George who was three years old at the time of the census.

On October 12, 1897, David married Josephine Schustedt in St. Paul, MN. David was 22 years old when they married and Josephine was 18. A little over two years later, David & Josephine had their first child. Mildred Harriet was born on December 22, 1899.

According to the 1900 Census, the Hammergren family lived in Ward 1, St. Paul, Minnesota. David's occupation was listed as a compositor. The census records also stated that they lived in a rented house.

About a year after their first child was born, David & Josie had their second child Sherman on January 9, 1902. Two years later, David Joseph was born on January 29, 1904.

David was always interested in politics and ran for his first political office in 1904. He was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives for one term from 1905-1908.

On November 6, 1907, David & Josie's fourth child, Lawrence, was born. Their fifth child Russell was born on February 7, 1910.

According to the 1910 Census, the Hammergren family had moved out of Minnesota and now lived in Clear Lake, WI. David's occupation was listed as an editor for a weekly paper. The census records stated they rented their house. Their oldest daughter Mildred was 10 years old at the time of the census and the youngest Russell was 3 months.

David & Josie's sixth and last child, Evelyn Marie, was born on September 11, 1912, in Wisconsin. David was 37 years old when Evelyn was born and Josie was age 33.

In 1915, David started the "Cochcrane Reporter" which was a local newspaper in Cochrane, WI. David was the owner, editor & publisher of the "Cochcrane Reporter" until his death.

According to the 1920 Census, the Hammergren family had moved back to Minnesota. All of their children still lived with them. However, Mildred was now married and her husband Andrew Urshan and daughter Grace lived with the Hammergren family. They all lived in a rented house at 837 Desota in St. Paul, MN. David's occupation was listed as a sloreman at a printing plant.

According to the 1930 Census, the Hammergren's had moved to Cochrane, Wisconisn. David's occupation was listed as a publisher in a printing office. The census records stated they rented their house. There were only three of the children living in the household: Lawrence (22), Russell (20) and Evelyn (17).

According to the 1940 Census, David & Josie lived in a rented house on 5th Street in Cochrane, WI. David's occupation was again listed as a publisher in a printing office. The census records also stated that David had completed one year of college & Josie completed thru the eighth grade. Their son Sherman along with his wife Elsie and daughter Lois were living with them at the time of the census. Sherman's occupation was a delivery man for a dairy and Elsie was a nurse in a private home.

David owned two farms in Wisconsin and raised pure-bred cattle.

David was elected to the Wisconsin legislature and served for three terms in Buffalo/Pepin County from 1939-1944. He was quite involved in He served on the Buffalo County, Wisconsin County Board of Supervisors. Finally, David was elected to be a delegate to the 1944 Republican National Convention and it was one of the highlights of DI's political career.

David Immanuel Hammergren died on August 14, 1944, in Winona, MN, at the age of 69. He is buried at the xxx Cemetery...

DAVID I. HAMMERGREN (Rep.) was born at St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 16, 1875. He is the graduate of high school and business college at St. Paul. He was formerly a compositor and foreman and superintendent of various St. Paul and Chicago concerns. For the past thirty years he has been in the publishing business. Mr. Hammergren was a member of the Minnesota Legislature from 1905 to 1907, a member of the Buffalo County Board from 1932 to 1939, and from 1936 to 1939 he was chairman of the board. He is serving his first term in the assemby. Home Address: Cochrane.
